Ontario Tire Resource Recovery Fee (Eco Fee)
What is this fee?
In accordance with Ontario’s Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016, all new tires sold in the province are subject to a Resource Recovery Fee. This is not a government tax; it is a fee collected to fund the collection, transportation, and recycling of tires at the end of their life.
Why is it collected?
Ontario is committed to a circular economy. This fee ensures that scrap tires are diverted from landfills and recycled into high-value products such as:
- Playground rubber surfacing
- Rubberized asphalt for Ontario roads
- Athletic track fields
- Industrial molded products
Current Rates (Estimated per tire)
- Passenger & Light Truck (PLT): $4.00 – $5.50
- Medium Truck (MT): $12.00 – $15.00
- Motorcycle/Trailer: $2.00 – $3.00
Note: Fees are subject to change based on the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) regulations.
